What is required to complete Customs House Brokerage?


Signed Power of Attorney (POA)

Signed by the buyer & on Company Letter Headed paper. This grant’s permission for Damco to complete CHB on behalf of the buyer and provides the required details to enable internal account creation.

EORI Number

The buyer must have a valid EORI and VAT number to hold a solid audit trail with customs authority and tax office & to be eligible to claim back any potential VAT paid.

FAQs

Q: What can hold up my Customs Clearance?
A: A variety of reasons can hold up a clearance, to name a few but not limited to, would be awaiting mandatory documents, awaiting payment, customs holds, Port Authority holds and vessel delays.

Q: What is a Deferment Account? 
A: A deferment account is an account registered with customs, which allows the customer to make Duty & VAT payments in a secure way. This initiates a smoother, quicker customs clearance, avoiding additional delays.

Q: What if I do not have a Deferment Account?
A: Customer can apply for their own account by contacting the local German customs authority directly or contact Damco at MyCustomsDE@Damco.com to seek approval to use theirs. This is subject to a % transactional charge, and credit checks may be required.

Q: What is an EORI Number and how do I get one?
A: An EORI (Economic Operators Registration & Identification System) Number is a unique reference number issued by Customs to Trader and is required to import or export goods. This is a one-time application, more information can be found upon http://www.zoll.de

Q: What is a classification number / HS Code
A: A classification number is a unique 11-digit code that relates to a specific product and determines the amount of Duty payable. The Trade Tariff link can provide help and useful tips to enable the customer to classify their products.  http://auskunft.ezt-online.de/ezto/Welcome.do

Q: Why do I need to provide a classification number HS Code?
A: It is the importers/Exporters legal responsibility to ensure the classification of their products are correct. However, if they are unsure please advise to contact Damco, who can assist in an advisory capacity only.

Q: How will I know when my shipment has cleared customs?
A: Our team at MyCustomsDE@Damco.com will email the customer with clearance paperwork as soon as the shipment has been released from customs and is free to leave the port.

Demurrage

Effective Date: 01/04/2018

Freetime and charges per container per calendar day (i.e. including week-ends and holidays) after freetime expires. Start date and end date are included in the calculation.

Notes:

  • Shipper’s Own Container is considered as equivalent to corresponding container type
  • 40´ High and 45´ High containers are considered equal to 40´
  • Special equipment/cargo, such as Flat Racks and Open Top equipment, is considered equal to reefer freetime and tariff
  • Shipper’s owned tank with DRY cargo follows freetime & rate of Dry equipment
  • Shipper’s owned tank with IMO cargo follows freetime & rate of IMO
  • For special deals: Please bear in mind that the calculation method of charges for special deals (free-time granted > tariff free-time) is ‘progressive’ and the leadoff rate slap(s) will be reduced by the number of days in excess of tariff free-time.
  • NOR (non-operating reefer) is considered as Dry Container
  • D&D product is split demurrage & detention, where demurrage is an all-inclusive rate (storage, plug-in, equipment rent on quay)

Container drop off

For transports arranged in Merchant Haulage, empty containers must be returned to the Place of Delivery location as stated on the Bill of Lading.

In exceptional cases and after confirmation by the carrier, empty containers may be returned at an alternate location against payment of a drop-off fee as per tariff below.

The trigger for the validity period is the first load date at origin (Price Calculation Date).

Empty Return of Containers: Redelivery must be arranged to the depot/terminal which is mentioned on our release-notification.
Any deviation needs to be requested in writing 48 hours prior to redelivery and may only be executed after receipt of written confirmation through us.
Unauthorized return of equipment to any depot/terminal not confirmed through us will result in additional costs that will be charged to the responsible party.
