What is Value Protect?
Even in the safest hands, accidents happen. When you're moving cargo across sea and land, you want to know you won't lose money if your shipment is damaged or lost — and standard terms of carriage don't always cover you. Transportation carriers are typically liable only for limited, legally-defined damage, which often falls far short of your cargo's real value. In many cases of fire, theft, or loss, they may not be liable at all.
Value Protect is a simple add-on that closes that gap. Applicable to all commodities, it extends your terms of carriage beyond the standard bill of lading to cover damage or loss that would normally be excluded — including fire and theft — and we waive our right to claim General Average contribution. You also get higher recovery limits on claims, paid out within 14 days of receiving the required documentation.

What are the inclusions and exclusions of Value Protect?
Value Protect extends liability for:
- Fire
- Fault or neglect in navigation or management of the ship
- Shipping accidents due to heavy weather or other dangers of sea
- Theft, excluding armed robbery, hijacking and piracy
- Saving or attempting to save life or property at sea
- Cargo damage caused by delay*
- General average contributions
*Within our control
Value Protect does not waive the carrier’s rights for incidents such as:
- Commercial damages and financial losses (i.e. loss of income)
- Wrongful handling related to the shipper and inherent defects to the goods
- Transport leg outside Maersk Bill of Lading
- Geopolitical events
Commercial Terms
Value Protect can be applied to all containerised shipments and all commodities transported by Maersk.
Value Protect will cover the invoicing value of the damaged goods. Compensation shall be limited to and not be more than the purchased Value Protect package.

Our simple four-step claims process enables you to focus on more important business while we handle the rest. Please get in touch with your local customer service representatives in writing, providing them with a claim cover letter, a notification of the damage and all required supporting documents.
