Sustainable procurement

As an end-to-end logistics provider, we have both the ability and a duty to advance responsible business practices throughout our supply chain.

Sustainable procurement

Maersk relies on a global network of some 40,000 suppliers to support our business and create value for our customers. Our Sustainable Procurement Program aims to advance responsible sourcing that minimizes environmental footprint, upholds ethical standards, and creates long-term value, while embedding sustainability throughout the lifecycle with the support of data-driven insights.

To achieve this, we continuously integrate ESG as a strategic topic across supplier lifecycle stages, establishing end-to-end visibility on supplier performance and promoting supplier collaboration and engagement to drive co-development and innovation towards more sustainable outcomes.

Our approach

Maersk takes a comprehensive approach to the entire supplier lifecycle, from contractual supplier selection and management to pre-qualification screening (based on environmental performance, labour practices, and safety standards); inclusion of ESG clauses in supplier contracts, and maintaining continuous oversight and improvement once partnerships are in place.
Our approach is anchored by our Maersk’s Sustainable Procurement Commit Rule for internal guidance; our Global Vendor Payment Policy, which safeguards our commitment to fair and timely payment practices; and our Supplier Code of Conduct.

The Supplier Code of Conduct outlines our core values and ESG criteria, setting clear expectations and minimum requirements from our suppliers towards ethical, socially responsible, and environmentally sustainable practices.

  • Scope includes Health, Safety & Security; Labour Rights; Working with Integrity; Environmental Responsibility; Implementation & Accountability; Grievance and Remedy Mechanism; and tracking of supplier SCoC commitment.
  • Grounded in internationally recognised frameworks including the UN Global Compact, ILO Conventions, UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and ISO standards on Health, Safety & Environment.
  • Maersk’s Supplier Code of Conduct

Our Sustainable Procurement priorities:

Maersk works to establish end-to-end visibility on supplier ESG performance throughout the supplier lifecycle through digitization and process standardisation, with a prioritized focus on value chain decarbonisation, safety and resilience, and labour and human rights.
In 2025, Maersk deployed a supplier ESG risk assessment platform across our supplier base. The platform assigns risk scores based on country and industry risks, business criticality and suppliers’ performance across ESG topics, enabling prioritisation of high-risk suppliers for further engagement and continuous improvement.
A centralised ESG dashboard provides real-time visibility into supplier performance, enabling continuous monitoring, improved data quality and enhanced governance, allowing us to work on hotspots while strengthening due diligence and compliance practices in line with our SCoC expectations.

Upholding social standards for third party labour

As our strategy drives significant logistics growth, we’re increasingly dependent on outsourced services and suppliers to deliver customer solutions. It is crucial that our third-party contractors maintain the same standards to ensure that these extended colleagues are treated responsibly. Our core focus areas include:
Ensuring that supplier-facing safety and security standards are appropriate and in line with Maersk global standards.
Collaborating with key client partners to gather insights on, and supporting, supplier People goals including inclusion.

Working with our suppliers on decarbonisation

Our suppliers are key to decarbonising Maersk’s own and our customers’ supply chains. Our commitment extends to strengthening our suppliers’ capabilities, providing education on sustainable procurement practices, and emphasizing their pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions across Maersk and customer value chains.
