Global safety day 2025

Citizenship

We actively support societies where we operate, leveraging our global reach, expertise and resources and partnering with local communities, nonprofits and customers on social and environmental causes.

Maersk's support for the communities we call home

Maersk takes an active corporate citizenship role in the 130+ countries we call home, where we can use our assets and skills to make an impact in five prioritized areas that align with our business and sustainability goals.

  • Disaster relief and preparedness
  • Empowering people to trade
  • Protecting the natural environment and oceans
  • Education
  • Health and safety

Maersk’s approach is rooted in meaningful engagement with partners and communities, guided by our Purpose, Core Values, and stakeholder expectations. We support local communities, non-profit organisations, and customers on environmental and social initiatives, as well as engaging in global partnerships that leverage our expertise and resources to address systemic challenges such as Maersk’s membership of the United Nations-led Logistics Emergency Teams (LET) to provide pro bono support during humanitarian crises and natural disasters.

Responding to those in need

In early 2025, devastating wildfires struck Los Angeles, and Maersk mobilized to support affected communities. This included donations to local initiatives supporting impacted business and workers, and to the LA Fire Department Foundation. Maersk also provided forklifts to the California Office of Emergency Services, supplied containers to nonprofits for resource distribution, and delivered meals to local fire stations.

Community partnering and education

In Vietnam, APM Terminals sponsored the construction of a swimming facility for students at Doan Duc Thai school in Cat Hai District – an initiative targeted at addressing a serious local safety risk and promoting well-being for children. Only 9% of schools in Vietnam have swimming facilities and only around 33% of primary and secondary students know how to swim. The project is also aligned with APM Terminals’ commitment to support education-focused community projects in areas where the company is engaged.

Supporting local economies and ecosystems

In 2025, APM Terminals Apapa—Nigeria’s largest container terminal—partnered with Garbage In Value Out (GIVO), a climate tech start-up combat plastic waste and promote circularity. The partnership launched a hub that converts recycled materials into products such as flowerpots and personal protective equipment, while creating a sustainable waste management system in Apapa Wharf and Onne Community. The solar-powered hub makes waste recycling easier and more accessible to communities, and currently recycles approximately 300 kilograms of waste per day, totaling about 90 metric tons annually.

Engaging our people to go ‘Green Every Day’

Maersk’s annual Go Green campaign aims to engage colleagues across our operations on environmental stewardship topics, raise awareness and create a platform for collective action with the communities where we operate. The theme for 2025 was ‘Green Every Day’, and initiatives at local offices and sites focused on for example energy and water conservation, waste segregation, and reforestation, with on- and off-site volunteer events carrying out trash clean-ups and recycling competitions.

Contributing to humanitarian aid

In addition to local initiatives, Maersk engages in global partnerships that leverage our expertise and resources to address systemic challenges while strengthening stakeholder relationships. Maersk’s membership of the United Nations-led Logistics Emergency Teams (LET) is a notable example, where we join forces with industry peers to provide pro bono support during humanitarian crises and natural disasters.

In 2025, Maersk contributed to LET activations related to humanitarian relief for Gaza, through the donation of a logistics hub in Amman, and in South Sudan, supporting the transport of foodstuffs in response to the severe hunger crisis in this conflict-affected region
