In the face of significantly disrupted global supply chains, a custom air charter solution from Thailand to Japan saved the day.
Our customer is a global leading tire company, who is dedicated to sustainably improving the mobility of goods and people by manufacturing and marketing tires and services for every type of vehicle. It also offers a full range of innovative services and solutions that help make mobility safer, more efficient and more environmentally friendly.
The COVID-19 global pandemic has caused unprecedented disruptions to supply chains worldwide. As airlines announced flight cancellations and ocean carriers increased blank sailings, the ripple effects were felt across each aspect of the transportation industry. When our customer had an emergency shipment that needed to get from Thailand to their facility in Japan as soon as possible, they needed a logistics partner who could respond quickly with reliable and competitive solutions.
Despite facing significant challenges including flight cancellations, cargo capacity constraints, equipment issues on ocean, and teams in different time zones working to coordinate this substantial order, the Maersk teams sprang into action. We were tasked with finding a solution with only the most suitable aircraft, while optimising and maximizing the load on each flight to achieve the lowest cost possible. The team quickly researched options and recommended movement via air charter solution which would meet their shipment’s transit, cost and dimensional requirements.
Extremely proud of the Maersk team who came together in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore to mount a unique air solution for one of our Key Clients needing an urgent and tailor-made solution, to meet its promise to their client. The team worked literally day and night with the client as well as our supplier partner to ensure an effective, cost efficient solution.
This was definitely one of our biggest challenges, but once we understood our customer’s needs and their product specifications, we mobilised quickly to use our local teams’ vast technical expertise to design and offer the best Air charter solution.
The team took extra care to walk through the entire process, step by step, to ensure all necessary documentation and paperwork was correctly in place to prevent any delays with clearance. Thanks to the seamless collaboration, alignment amongst teams in Thailand and Japan, and the specific attention WAY to every detail, Maersk teams worked around the clock over the weekend and got the first of 11 air charters off safely and on time.
The shipment was successfully delivered to the customer on time and without issues. This has demonstrated Maersk’s ability to be a true leader of integrated container logistics, capable of designing solutions for customers through our strong collaboration across teams and multiple solutions. In challenging environments, such as the recent COVID-19 pandemic, Maersk remains customer-focused, providing value through insights, data, analysis and the hands-on approach of the team globally.
Now that air freight services are part of our product family, Maersk is superbly equipped to manage time-critical, oversized or high-value cargo transportation. By combining the speed of air with the cost savings of other modes, customers will be able to reduce inventory and improve their service offerings by fast response time at an affordable price.
It’s very fulfilling to be able to provide a truly integrated solution for our customer’s supply chain needs – as represented in this case of the 11 air charters where we are providing an Air solution to help keep our customer’s supply chain intact! This is for a customer who we have traditionally been serving via our Ocean activities, which then expanded to Land-side activities and now we have truly completed the transportation mode circle!
