What is required to complete Customs House Brokerage?

Signed Direct Representation Authorisation / Power of Attorney (POA)

Signed by the Trader & on Company Letter Headed paper. This grant’s permission for Damco to complete CHB on behalf of the Trader and provides the required details to enable internal account creation.

Mandatory documents required:

  • Signed Direct Representation Authorisation / POA
  • Commercial invoice(s)
  • Packing list(s)
  • Classification Number / HS code
  • Copy of the Bill of Lading

  • Preference Certificates

EORI Number

The trader must have a valid EORI and VAT number to hold a solid audit trail with customs authority and tax office & to be eligible to claim back any potential VAT paid.

Q: What is the Pricing / Cost of these services?

Q: What can hold up my Customs Clearance?
A: A variety of reasons can hold up a clearance, to name a few but not limited to, would be awaiting mandatory documents, awaiting payment, Customs Holds, Port Authority Holds and Vessel delays

Q: What is an EORI Number and how do I get one?
A: An EORI (Economic Operators Registration & Identification System) Number is a unique reference number issued by Customs to the Importer and is required to import goods from outside the EU. This is a one-time application, more information can be found upon https://www.belastingdienst.nl/wps/wcm/connect/nl/douane_voor_bedrijven/content/wat-is-een-eori-nummer

Q: What is a Deferment Account?
A: A deferment account is an account registered with customs, which allows the customer to make Duty & VAT payments in a secure way. This initiates a smoother, quicker customs clearance, avoiding additional delays.

Q: What if I do not have a Deferment Account?
A:Customer can apply for their own account by contacting the Dutch customs authority directly or contact Damco at at MyCustomsNL@Maerks.com to seek approval to use theirs. This is subject to a % transactional charge, and credit checks may be required

Q: What is a classification number HS Code?
A: A classification number is a unique 10-digit code that relates to a specific product and determines the amount of Duty payable. Q: Why do I need to provide a classification number HS Code?
A: As the importer/Exporter it’s your legal responsibility to ensure classification of your products are correct. However, if you’re unsure please do not hesitate to contact Damco at MyCustomsNL@Maersk.com, who can assist you in an advisory capacity.

Q: How will I know when my shipment has cleared customs?
A: Our team at MyCustomsNL@maersk.com will email the customer with clearance paperwork as soon as the shipment has been released from customs

CHB = Customs House Brokerage
VAT = Value Added Tax
HTS = Harmonized Tariff Schedule

Demurrage

Effective Date: 01/01/2017

Expiry Date: Until further notice

Freetime and charges per container per calendar day (i.e. including week-ends and holidays) after freetime expires. Start date and end date are included in the calculation.

Notes:

  • Shipper’s Own Container is considered as equivalent to corresponding container type
  • 40´ High and 45´ High containers are considered equal to 40´
  • Special equipment/cargo, such as Flat Racks and Open Top equipment, is considered equal to reefer freetime and tariff
  • Shipper’s owned tank with DRY cargo follows freetime & rate of Dry equipment
  • Shipper’s owned tank with IMO cargo follows freetime & rate of IMO
  • For special deals: Please bear in mind that the calculation method of charges for special deals (free-time granted > tariff free-time) is ‘progressive’ and the leadoff rate slap(s) will be reduced by the number of days in excess of tariff free-time.
  • NOR (non-operating reefer) is considered as Dry Container
  • D&D product is split demurrage & detention, where demurrage is an all-inclusive rate (storage, plug-in, equipment rent on quay)
