- Free time, demurrage, and detention terms apply to the country where the full unit is gated in for export by the customer or at the location designated by the carrier.
- Detention: Applies from gate out Empty from the terminal/depot until the container is gated in Full at the terminal/depot.
- Charges are in USD per calendar day, including weekends and holidays.
- Maersk uses a Progressive method to calculate demurrage and detention charges once free time expires.
- For customers with special agreements, exceeding the extended free time triggers charges based on the corresponding tier in our tariff. Subsequent days are not automatically charged at first tier rates.
- Free Time.
- Intermodal Free Time: Conditions are the same for Carrier Haulage and Merchant Haulage.
- The Free Time period for detention begins when the empty container is gated out from the terminal/depot and ends when the full container is gated in at the terminal/depot.
- Hazardous cargo receives the same free time conditions as dry units.
- However, handling and storage responsibilities for hazardous cargo remain with the cargo owner.
- Non Operating Reefer (NOR): DRY equipment free time and per diem conditions apply. NOR with hazardous cargo is treated as DRY.
- Equipment Types.
- Dry equipment includes 20'DRY, 40'DRY, 40'HQ, 45'DRY, and Reefer units (20'RF, 40'RF, 40'RH).
- Special equipment includes Open Tops, Flat Racks, and Out of Gauge cargo.
- SOC Equipment refers to units owned by the shipper/merchant.
- COC: Equipment refers to units owned by the carrier.
- Shipper owned containers (SOC) are not subject to detention, but they may be subject to Storage ffe.
- Special Conditions.
- Spot conditions may differ from the conditions mentioned above. Maersk Spot (instant booking system) conditions are available in the downloadable document provided Here, which supersedes any separately agreed-upon terms. If you have any doubts, please check with the shipper or your local agents to confirm the booking/shipment modality you used.
- Storage, Demurrage, and Detention charges for import shipments depend on the Price Calculation Date (PCD):
- PCD for non-FMC trades: Date the vessel is scheduled to depart the Port of Loading.
- PCD for FMC regulated trades: Date Maersk takes possession of the last container listed on the transport document.
- This affects any negotiated special free time. Agreements must be finalized before or on the PCD.
- Other Important Information.
- D&D Calculator Click here to know more about it
- Terminal storage charges apply for the space used by the container. Other storage related charges may apply and are determined directly by the terminal; these are not linked to the container itself.
- Terminal storage charges apply for the space used by the container. Other storage related charges may apply and are determined directly by the terminal; these are not linked to the container itself.
- Shipper Responsibilities
- The Shipper must ensure that the cargo is exported to a Consignee with genuine interest and the ability to receive the goods at destination.
- The Shipper is responsible for enabling timely cargo removal at destination and fulfilling all related obligations.
- If cargo is abandoned or the Consignee fails to collect it, the Shipper will be jointly and severally liable to the Consignee for any costs, expenses, damage, or losses incurred by the carrier.
