Refresher of Heavy Load Surcharge (HWS)

At Maersk, we remain dedicated in our commitment to delivering best-in-class services to support your business. In line with this commitment, we would like to provide a refresher on the implementation of the Heavy Load Surcharge (HWS).

The Heavy Load Surcharge (HWS) applies to containers exceeding the weight threshold defined for each trade lane. This surcharge is designed to help regulate heavy cargo and optimize vessel utilization. The charge will be automatically applied 2 days after Verified Gross Mass (VGM) submission if the VGM exceeds the applicable threshold. It is charged per container and follows the Price Calculation Date of each shipment.

HWS is classified as an incidental charge and therefore does not appear in the price overview at the time of booking. In addition to client advisories, a disclaimer is included during the booking process to enhance awareness, as shown in the screenshot below.
