Low Water Levels on Manaus River

Novemeber 12, 2021 - Update 2 - Surcharge withdrawal

In the light of the development of water levels on Manaus River verified by the Brazilian National Agency of Waters (ANA), Maersk will withdraw the application of 2021 Low Water Surcharge (LWC) at Port Manaus, Brazil with immediate effect.

We are monitoring the situation and depending on the development, further measures might need to be taken. However, as of now, the surcharge connected to this incident will be cancelled in its entirety.

We take great pride in our customer experience and wish to support our customer in all avenues. For shipments** where the Low Water Surcharge has already been applied, we will refrain from collecting the above-mentioned surcharge.

We do not wish to impose any additional burdens to our customers in times of crisis and by offering to forgo the applied Low Water Surcharge, our aim is to give you buffer to maneuver some of the current pressure points caused by the Manaus situation, all to lessen the impact on your business, which is of the utmost importance to us.

October 20, 2021 - Update 1 - postponement of Surcharge Implementation Date

Please be advised that, in the light of the development of water levels on the Manaus River, verified by the National Water Agency (ANA) in Brazil, Maersk will postpone the application of the Low Water Surcharge (LWC) to 1st November 2021.

This Low Water fee will be applicable to all containers from or into Port Manaus, Brazil.

The tariff levels are as follows

* PCD = Price Calculation Date. For non-FMC, PCD refers to the scheduled departure date of the first water leg at the time of booking confirmation for non-spot bookings. For FMC, PCD is last container gate-in date for non-spot bookings.

The LWC is an exceptional and temporary charge applicable due to the extraordinary conditions of navigation that will be periodically reviewed and adjusted if necessary, by virtue of the current situation. It will be removed once the sailing conditions return to normal.

For your reference, we have also included the levels and the rate structure for some sample corridors (Short-Term) from Shanghai, China to Manaus, Brazil valid from 20th October until further notice. These charges may be changed in the future and we will notify you accordingly.

• The above sample corridor is also subject to other applicable surcharges, including local charges and contingency charges.
• These rates are unaffected by, and do not affect, any tariff notified, published or filed in accordance with local regulatory requirements.
• For trades subject to the US Shipping Act or the China Maritime Regulations, quotations or surcharges that vary from the Maersk tariff shall not be binding on Maersk unless included in a service contract or service contract amendment that has been filed with the Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) or the Shanghai Shipping Exchange, as applicable.
