- For all outport, deadline Charcoal is 3 working days prior departure before COB (5PM)
- Removing IN3/JKT/PAG, omitting Indonesia
Failing to meet the cut-off, missing any of the required documents, or in any situation where the cargo is considered as dangerous or IMDG regulated, will result in cargo shut-out. Maersk Line will not be responsible for any costs and consequences associated in such action.

This letter serves as the latest version with regards to the acceptance procedure for Charcoal and Carbon products (non-activated carbon blacks of mineral origin or carbons made by a steam activation process). Other names for the product can include but is not limited to: Biowood, biofuel, charcoal briquettes, coco shell briquettes, coconut shell brics, hardwood pulp briquettes, wood briquettes, wood pellets, wood pulp briquettes, charcoal expellers, BBQ briquettes, natural carbon/pure charcoal, charcoal non-modified, mangrove charcoal, charcoal residue - and more.
Maersk Line accepts non – IMO regulated charcoal. IMO regulated charcoal (hazardous) are not accepted.

Certificate of Self-heating Test (Laboratory test certificate according to IMO Special Provision 925 reference UN Manual of Tests and Criteria 33.3.). Starting 01 Aug 2016, we will only accept self-heating certificates similar to the format as attached (sample) from all shippers export from Indonesia.
Three points to remember for the Self-heating certificate:
- The self-heating certificate must be performed over minimum of 24 hours
- The size of the material used for testing must be mentioned on the certificate
- The proper temperature graph of the test over the 24 hours must be included.
Accreditation Letter. Certificate confirming that the laboratory performing the test has been approved by the competent authority. The competent authority in Indonesia is as follows:

Before you gate-in the container, please ensure to submit the Vanning and Weather certificate as this is a requirement to load the container on the vessel. Please note that the documents submitted is subject for approval.
Documents required prior to loading
Weathering Report, or certificate describing the cooling process and attesting minimum 14 days of pre-cooling prior to packaging. In the case of activated carbon, weathering report is to include description of activation process and name of chemical used, alternatively describing the steam activation process. Container numbers and shipment numbers must be denoted on the Weathering Report.
Vanning survey certificate issued by Marine Cargo Surveyor attesting that:
- Cargo packed in accordance with IMDG code.
- Packaging is air tight and intact.
- Temperature of cargo not exceeding 5 degrees Celsius above the ambient temperature.
- Packaging and interior atmosphere in container is clean and odorless, no presence of fumes or smoke.
Vanning survey certificate is to be submitted for every shipment (B/L) including following information.
- Total number and size of containers.
- Container numbers.
- Seal numbers of respective container numbers.
- Date of vanning of each container.
- Photographs depicting the stuffing process.
- The vanning certificates states "A 1 kg sample has been taken during stuffing and cargo has been identified as declared by shipper. The sample retained for minimum 3 months in surveyors office and is always available for ML review".
Effective immediately, charcoal documents are expected to be submitted prior gate-in. Please see below new schedule.
