Maersk Line’s largest customer had the honour of naming the fourth Triple-E vessel.

On 24 September, the fourth vessel in the Triple-E series had an official naming ceremony held at Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) in Okpo, South Korea. This was the first Triple-E vessel to be named by a customer, and it was only fitting that Maersk Line’s largest customer, Kuehne + Nagel, had the honour. A total of 52 guests were present at the ceremony, representing 11 different customers.

A ship called Marie Mærsk

Bettina Schacht, the wife of Otto Schacht, Executive Vice President of Kuehne + Nagel KG, acted as lady sponsor for the vessel. The ceremony kicked off with naming the ship, followed by breaking the champagne bottle at the target on the starboard side and blessing the ship.

“I name you Marie Mærsk,” Bettina said. “As you sail the waters of the world, may your journeys be smooth and your tasks successful. May God bless and protect you and the crew. and may you be a safe haven for all who board you, and may you bring prosperity and pride to all.”

Marie Mærsk is named after the sister of A.P. Moller’s mother. It is the sixth time that the name Marie has been used for a vessel in the Maersk fleet since 1920.

Karsten Kildahl, Head of the North Europe Region for Maersk Line welcomed the guests, which included several senior executives from Kuehne + Nagel in Asia and Europe. He expressed his gratitude to all the guests who went to the naming ceremony for the latest vessel in the Maersk Line fleet.

Karsten extolled the virtues of the Triple-E, saying “The shape of the hull and the many new innovations on the ships, such as the waste heat recovery system, along with a lower ideal speed design, make for a highly efficient vessel which saves energy, as well as CO2 emissions. What it adds up to, is a vessel that emits 50% less CO2 per moved container than the current average vessel on the Asia-Europe route.”

Strengthening the future partnership

On their part, the special guests from Kuehne + Nagel were excited about being part of the ceremony and on-board tour and really appreciated Maersk Line’s hospitality.

After its naming, Marie Mærsk will make its maiden call at Busan and Kwangyang on 4 November, returning to Korea on 27 January after the 83-day journey to North Europe and back. It will be preceded on the route by the third vessel in the Triple-E series which is scheduled to be named at a ceremony in Singapore in late November during its maiden voyage.
