An air bridge and supply chain operation to secure delivery of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to health care workers and thereby reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19 in hospitals.
The operation was initiated and coordinated by A.P. Moller Holding with support from A.P. Moller - Maersk sourcing the PPE and Damco transporting it to the hospitals concerned. The hospitals were responsible for the selection of materials, review of supplier certificates and quality control.
The Maersk Bridge operation was terminated in July 2020.
PPE means Personal Protective Equipment. It protects against microbial risks by preventing infectious materials such as COVID-19 from entering the body – typically through the respiratory system.
As the COVID-19 virus has spread globally, most authorities have struggled to source PPE for employees in the health care sector. PPE saves lives in the health care industry because:
1. if health care workers contract the virus their own health is at risk
2. infected health care workers risk transmitting the virus to other patients in the hospitals
3. transmission of the virus among health care workers reduces overall hospital capacity.
The Maersk Bridge was developed as a response to a request from Righospitalet in Denmark asking A.P. Moller Holding to help them source PPE. In just two weeks it evolved from an initial idea to delivery of cargo, and today Maersk Bridge supports health care workers in several countries.
I have enormous respect and gratitude for the work carried out in the hospitals and felt compelled that we do our utmost to leverage our own Group’s network and capabilities to support them. It’s still too early to tell if we are successful, but I’m very humbled that we are able to cooperate with Rigshospitalet and RegionH to support the health care system.
The health service in Denmark is in serious need of masks and protective suits, so we can protect our hardworking doctors and nurses against COVID-19. A.P. Moller Holding is reacting really quickly to develop this solution which brings masks and suits from the other side of the world and gets them to hospital wards across Denmark. The collaboration is excellent, and we are very grateful for that.
The A.P. Moller Group consists of A.P. Moller - Maersk, Maersk Drilling, Maersk Tankers, Maersk Product Tankers, KK Wind Solutions and A.P. Moller Capital. A.P.
