Disruptions are here to stay
The world of business and politics is never constant. And the ripple effects of global decisions and events constantly threaten to buckle the best-laid supply chain strategies in Asia. The lethal combination of global disruptions and the boom in e-commerce demand, has led to skyrocketing prices for transporting cargo from Asia to the world. Furthermore, customers are opting out of long-term contractual agreements like Requests for Quotations (RFQs) and Block Space Agreements (BSAs), preferring spot market-based agreements. This wait-and-see approach has led to sluggish demand for airfreight which has increased unpredictability in the market.
Whether rates will remain strong next year will depend on what we see in the airfreight sector towards the end of the year
Ocean vs Air – It’s a close debate
Ocean has always been the go-to medium for transporting goods worldwide, due to its infrastructure, competitive pricing and reach. Air Freight while high on price, is used to transport specialised goods and time-sensitive orders. However, the truth is that the cost gap between transporting cargo via ocean and air is narrowing down. And with peak season congestions coming up, air freight may have the upper hand in reliably getting your goods moving, but at what cost?
