Mass Balance is a chain of custody model used by Maersk ECO Delivery Ocean. This model allows for the physical detachment of the ECO Delivery container and the used biofuel. However, the ECO Delivery container, as well as the biofuel used for said container is required to be transported/used within the same organizational boundaries, in our case, within Maersk’s organization boundaries.

The total energy from biofuels and green methanol is tracked across the supply chain and mapped to Maersk ECO Delivery customers such that the energy output equals the energy input, while taking into consideration any conversion factors and yield losses. The appropriate allocation to containers is ensured through segregated bookkeeping. The green fuel cannot be allocated to specific shipping legs.
