Opportunity

Why should you work on the Energy Transition Platform?

The world is facing a climate emergency. We see it as our obligation – as an industry leader and with the resources available to us – to do all we can to get to net zero operations as fast as possible and to help our customers decarbonize their global supply chains end to end.

As a key player in an industry responsible for 3.5 billion tons of annual direct emissions, A.P. Moller - Maersk (Maersk) is committed to leading the decarbonization of logistics and taking responsibility to be part of the solution, enabling a green and just transition. In early 2022, we announced the ambitious goal of advancing the target year for our commitment to reach net zero emissions by a full decade, to 2040. This applies to our own operations, but – even more importantly – covers all three emission scopes and supports our customers’ own climate commitments.

In 2022, we improved our methodologies for scope calculations, allowing us to report more precise figures which increase the total emissions reported. Scope 3 calculations remain an evolving science, and our footprint will continue to evolve with more accurate data, and due to acquisitions and changes in our business.

Among other responsibilities, The Energy Transition platform team will build services to measure, calculate, and enable net zero commitments across our business by 2040. This means together we will:

  • Identify, source, normalize and govern timely and accurate data to enable emissions calculations

  • Provide a single source of calculated emissions measures and analysis using defined standard calculation methods with all applicable reporting schemes

  • Provision calculated results to the end users (APIs, dashboards)

Technologies?

This is a new team, building from the ground up so you will help make decisions around the stack and technologies we use. At Maersk, you commonly see:

  • Go, Java, Kotlin, Python for application code

  • Kafka for our async message queues

  • Kubernetes to schedule and run services

  • Azure for a lot of our infrastructure

  • React, Vue for many front ends

Your day to day?

As a lead software engineer, you will pair daily with other software engineers, coaching them in Extreme Programming (XP) methodologies, such as pair programming, test-driven development, and continuous integration and delivery. You will work with a team of product managers, designers, and engineers to enable your team to deliver and iterate on high-quality software products that deliver user and business value daily.

You will be actively engaged in building a platform to capture emissions data from other products, which will be enabled through API based data exchange and event streaming providing a unified view of global emissions data across Maersk operations.

You will be also engaged in building a service offering that standardizes emission calculation in alignment with Green House Gas (GHG) protocols, across the organization. This accounting platform and calculator will be integrated with other products and services to build a single source of truth for standardized emissions data for the group. As a Lead Engineer in the Energy Transition Area, you will:

  • Build the simplest possible thing that will continually deliver working and well tested software

  • Define and prioritize features, bugs, and chores alongside our product and design teams

  • Balance feature and chore work on your team, striving to keep the code extensible in a dynamic product environment

  • Aid in discovery and lead the design of complex data ingestion, calculation and publishing services

  • Develop a deep understanding the energy transition domain and keep your team on course with the high -level value delivery goals of the group

Please apply if you -

  • Thrive in early-stage environments where the question of what to build is as critical as how to build it

  • Have strong experience in developing distributed, resilient, and maintainable systems

  • Have knowledge of extreme programming practices/values such as TDD or pair programming

  • Have significant experience in building and maintaining APIs

  • Enjoy coaching and guiding members of your team with attention to creating an inclusive and psychologically safe environment

  • You have significant experience working with more than one programming language including one of (Java, Go, Python, Clojure, Elixir)

Who is the Hiring Manager?

The hiring manager for this role is Heather, Sr Engineering Director for the Energy Transition area. Here are a few principles Heather leads by:

Kindness above all else

Remove waste when you see it

Effective actions > High Activity

Know your users / Use your product

Put things on the table today, not tomorrow

Always reach across the aisle

Support curiosity

Teams win and lose together

Keep yourself recharged

Tell it like it is

Lean Product Development & Extreme Programming have influenced Heather a lot. They both set a foundation for later work like Accelerate or DevOps. Heather looks to develop products in a way that maximizes learning along the way, while remaining aware of the ethical tension in moving too fast without consideration.

Remote work & Relocation?

Remote working is available. In general, we allow teams to set their own schedule and decide which days are best to be together. Some teams are in 2 days a week and some 5, this is up to you. Relocation is available for our roles and visas are generally a simple process. Denmark also has a special tax for expats for 84 months which may be of interest for you to research.
