This position is responsible for the overall performance of the yard, including operations, safety, housekeeping and security from the identification of drivers and proper procedures for access and departure from the yard. The Yard Manager schedules staff and plans, directs, and controls all activities regarding the yards. The Yard Manager also selects, motivates and develops all yard staff members. This works closely with the other departments in establishing and meeting performance objectives and goals. The Yard Manager is responsible for achieving company objectives in regard to cost, productivity, customer service, profits, implementing company policies and the managing the daily Yard Drivers’ duties.

We are looking for a Yard Manager to join our North America Warehouse and Distribution team. This position will be based in Chesapeake, VA.

Performance Team and Damco Distribution, now part of the Maersk global organization under a combined Warehousing & Distribution division, offer third party logistics services to over 500 customers. Encompassing almost 15 million square feet of warehousing capacity throughout the country and a large transportation segment capturing a variety of services, we have key supply chain hubs in the Los Angeles and New Jersey/New York areas, and other facilities along the Western & Eastern coasts along with multiple locations in the Midwest. Delivering significant sales and profitability growth, we will drive the Inland Logistics and Services business for the combined US business units for Maersk.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement an efficient method to assure supplies and equipment is available at all times and manage customer equipment pools to ensure efficient operations and meet profit goals/business needs
• Conduct internal audits regarding safety, housekeeping, security, equipment and inventory
• Ensure the accuracy and timely preparation, processing, distribution and retention of all necessary reports and records regarding all operating functions
• Ensure safety policies and practices are being adhered to and are fundamental to the Company culture
• Collaborate with the Operations Manager and Information Systems in the development and maintenance of necessary operations of the YMS
• Initiate resolutions and improvements to all procedures regarding the yard areas
• Manage Yard and Gate staff and activities to ensure all daily goals are met
• Review forecasting of container volumes to ensure proper staffing and scheduling
• Develop processes and measurements necessary to meet operational productivity goals and monitor process improvements
• Assure that customers receive the required level of operations and administrative support to exceed customer’s expectations
• Communicate and coordinate any systematic issues and/or development needs regarding yard and/or operational activity
• Be proficient in all yard and operational systems with ability to train others and troubleshoot as needed
• Be responsive to budgetary guidelines in monitoring all expenditures and costs as it pertains to customer and/or administration at site location. Be prepared to enforce with all colleagues and/or direct reports
• Effectively communicate with other departments and shifts to ensure the efficiency of the Yard as a whole
• Have constant dialog with the Managers on daily operational issues and events, in their absence report the same information to the Operations Manager
• Meet customer and Company key performance metrics, goals and objectives
• Participate with the training of the other managers
• Foster team environment within the facility and demonstrate strong leadership skills
• Manage, evaluate and mentor Managers
• Supports the commitment to the Company’s Core Values
• Coordinate with Managers and Human Resources to ensure adherence to Company policies and procedures
• Ensure that reports, billing and labor payroll are timely and accurate
• If applicable, the Assistant Yard Manager responsible for interpreting, administering and managing labor in accordance with bargaining unit contract guidelines
• Performs job related duties as specified by management

We are looking for

Education and Experience:
5+ years logistics experience in a warehouse/transportation setting
• 2+ years logistics supervisory experience in a warehouse/transportation setting
• 2+ years experience in a customer facing role
• High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
• Intermediate proficient with systems (i.e.: Microsoft products; warehouse management systems, etc)
• Must be able to lift up to 50lbs
