Measuring our impact on society

A.P. Moller - Maersk has been conducting socio-economic impact assessments since 2009. These studies are an important tool to advance our knowledge of Maersk’s development impacts across economic, social and environmental dimensions. They provide a platform to identify strategies and activities that may accelerate our positive impacts and minimize negative impacts across value chains.

What are socio-economic impacts?

By creating jobs, training workers, building physical infrastructure, procuring goods and services, transferring technology, paying taxes, and expanding access to products and services through global trade, our businesses affect the assets, capabilities, opportunities, and standards of living of people and societies.

In addition to impacts through our own operations, we also have impacts indirectly through our value chain, as well as in the wider economic sphere, sometimes called induced effects or spillover effects. A socio-economic impact assessment is a structured means for us to measure these effects in the societies in which we operate. The impacts matter to our bottom line. The nature and scale of our impacts influence to what extent we have sound value chains, positive local communities, and supportive governments, now and in the future.

How do we apply the results?

The result of an impact assessment can be the identification of specific actions or priority areas for business response. This may involve for example stakeholder engagement, public affairs, mitigating actions and/or business development initiatives

Selecting countries and focus areas for the impact assessments

When we decide which countries and focus areas to include in an impact assessment for A.P. Moller - Maersk, we consider consider a combination of both business and societal criteria:
  • Importance to our business, including near- to medium-term growth potential for at least two of Maersk's major business units.

  • Significant economic, social, environmental challenges and/or opportunities that Maersk can play an important role in addressing, in particular focusing on the main pillars of our sustainability strategy: trade, education, and energy efficiency.

  • Strong engagement and demand from business leaders in the countries to increase potential for successful outcome and application of study results.
