SAFETY PERFORMANCE

While work-related incidents and fatalities have declined over the past decade, they are still too high, and we regard every fatality that occurs as an unacceptable tragedy.

In 2011 the vast majority of our business units improved their LTI frequency; seven out of the 11 largest business units now have a LTI frequency less than 1.0. It is a positive development and reflects the work Maersk is doing in order to create a safe workplace.

At Maersk, every accident is one too many.

Despite reductions in LTI frequencies, we have not been able to reduce the number of fatal accidents which increased to 13 in 2011 against 12 in 2010 among our own employees as well as contractors and third party who work under our direction. In addition, two of our employees lost their life by undertaking work at sites where we do not have operational control.

Targets 2012

  • Missing five working groups within Health and Safety Comittee
  • Reduce the number of fatalities
  • Ensure strong safety governance across BU's and Group
  • Improved accident investigations for severe accidents
  • Start developing phase two of the safety strategy on occupational health and health management
