The namegiving of the first newbuilding in a series of six container vessels for Maersk Sealand took place Saturday, 31 March 2001 at Odense Steel Shipyard. The Lindø newbuilding 171 was named by Mrs Christine Kühne, who was accompanied by her husband, Mr Klaus-Michael Kühne, Executive Chairman of Kühne & Nagel International AG, one of the world's leading transport and logistics groups. The company is a very important business partner for The A.P. Moller Group.
The Yard's newbuilding was named LAURA MÆRSK. The new container vessel has a capacity of 3,700 TEU (twentyfoot units). The length of the vessel is 266 metres, the width is 37 metres and the draught is 14 metres.
LAURA MÆRSK is equipped with a 10 cylinder MAN-B&W diesel main engine. The engine develops 62,000 BHP and at 94 revolutions per minute the fully loaded vessel reaches a speed of 25 knots.
After sea trials in mid April the vessel will be delivered to A. P. Møller and enter the Maersk Sealand service between Europe and Asia.
LAURA MÆRSK will be commanded by Captain Finn Kuhn Jensen with Allan Nørgaard Eriksen as Chief Engineer. The vessel has a crew of 13 and will have her homeport in Hvide Sande.
