On 22 November 2002 A.P. Møller hosted a namegiving ceremony of another newbuilding in the series of panamax container vessels built for A.P. Moller/Maersk Group at Hyundai Heavy Industries. Mrs Cathrine Karcher, wife of Mr Xavier Karcher, Chairman of the National Council of Engineers and Scientists of France, honoured the owner by naming the newbuilding MAERSK GIRONDE.
The MAERSK GIRONDE will be registered in Port Aux Francais in France. It is the first vessel in the A.P. Møller Fleet to fly the Tricolore and thereby strengthen A.P. Møller’s presence in France.
A.P. Møller will take delivery of an additional sister vessel in 2004, which also will be registered in France.
MAERSK GIRONDE has a capacity of abt. 4.300 TEU (twenty-foot containers) and is equipped with a 10 cylinder MAN B&W main engine.
After delivery she will enter Maersk Sealand’s world-wide liner service.
MAERSK GIRONDE will be commanded by Captain Gerard Thomas, with Geoffrey Eales, as Chief Engineer. The vessel will have a crew of 13.
